White: Personal responsibility required to improve Tech Greek culture

With the formation from the Task Force on Greek Organization Culture, announced last week by Texas Tech President M. Duane Nellis, recent incidents involving Tech fraternities have recently resulted in action. According to previous articles within the Daily Toreador, a minumum of one student death along with a highly publicized scandal have super green express fitness beauty stemmed from fraternity events this year. It is likely that even more illicit activities have occurred without being reported.
While a commendable initial step, the job force is far from enough.
When the epidemic of illegal, offensive and disrespectful behavior for fraternities is to be offer an end, the college must focus resources on punishing people who break rules instead of making recommendations to the group in general. Only when individuals realize they can no longer hide behind their Greek letters will they be deterred from future malicious acts.
To be able to put such a policy in position, three things must take place. First, as a condition for their being permitted to affiliate with the university, the fraternities should be necessary to police the conduct that belongs to them members. Second, law enforcement resources at both a nearby and university level should be put in spot to ensure these sorts of incidents don't reoccur. Finally, victims should be entitled to swift justice, as well as, these individual offenders should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
In short, if the fraternities themselves, Tech and also the community as a whole are unwilling to ensure compliance with basic moral values, and even the law, among their visitors, the fraternities should no longer be able to exist in affiliation with the university.
Now consider all these points in greater detail.
Supposedly, the Greek organizations (we concentrate on the fraternities here simply because they tend to have a greater proportion of illicit activities) already are policing themselves. Clearly, this mechanism has failed. Phi Delta Theta, the fraternity active in the newest allegation, declares in the mission statement that each member should "(attain) personally a higher standard of morality." Certainly the members involved in the incident in question failed in that goal and should be disciplined. Indeed, another members also failed for the reason that duty, because they allowed the offending sign to stay in place.
Furthermore, let's not pretend that an offensive sign is the only immoral thing that has occurred at a Greek gathering this season. The truth is, it is usually the tip of the iceberg. Based on a study authored by BBC News, males inside a fraternity are three times as prone to perpetrate a sexual assault as non-Greek males. It is about time for those fraternity members to reside by their mission statements, and turn these numbers around.
While it may be hard for somebody who has dedicated so much money and time for an organization to consider a stand, instead of going along to obtain along, when certainly one of their "brothers" causes harm, that is simply what must be done. Today I call upon all fraternity members to face up for what's right, even when it's not easy. That's the main difference between as being a boy and as being a man, and it's what's necessary to save the Greek system in the long run.
So far as the 2nd point, it is important that police force focus on the Greek organizations as potential offenders. It's difficult to argue that more criminal activity occurs at non-Greek events than at Greek events. Police force should look closely at large gatherings where people think they are able to hide behind a group and get away with criminal activity. If they know they're more prone to get caught, individual members might be less likely to commit violent acts.
Finally, it is vital that legal action be taken against individuals who break what the law states even if they're part of a sizable group. The rule of law demands that each person be treated equally. Whether it is a fact, there's a perception that fraternity members can get away with "minor" offenses simply because their organizations bring money to campus and conduct community service events.
Tech must ensure that folks charged with any crimes, particularly those of the sexual nature, are investigated thoroughly and disciplined accordingly. In accordance with this, victims must feel thanks for visiting come forward, even from the weight of a whole organization.
Regardless of how much cash in donations the university might lose whether it goes following a fraternity or any specific member, it is worth it over time should there be forget about victims. Likewise, no amount of community service can make up for the heinous offenses that occur regularly at fraternity events. "Adopt-a-highway" and canned food drives can't ever compensate for sexual assault, underage drinking and illegal drug abuse, to name a few.
Students, faculty and community members alike should demand responsibility for individuals, whether in a fraternity or not, who participate in illegal activities and perpetrate sexual violence.
It looks like the Greek product is broken, and also the university will be commended for developing a task force to deal with some of these issues. However, it will not be enough. The only way to fix the machine is to ensure every member jimpness beauty fat loss capsule knows they will be attributed for improper behavior, which must occur with an organizational, university-wide and law enforcement level.
By having an influx of personal accountability, the Greek system can eventually regain the respect from the community. However, if these reforms are not instituted, it is a question of if, not when, the Greek system will fail.
